I have heard a lot of things about bio balls and how they are nitrate factories. I have about 180 lbs of LR in 100 gallon tank and it is going to be a reef with many corals. Should i take the bio balls out of the sump? if yes what should I replace it with, if anything?

If my canopy is only 7 inchs tall, can I use MH??? I heard that you need to have them at least 8 - 12 inches above the water. Is that a must or is that so the water doesnt get too hot, becuse I have a chiller. Please let me know. TIA
