    Well water, with sulpher

My well water is the same way and I haven't had any problem with using it for water changes the way it is. We drink it too and run it in the coffee maker. The only thing I've noticed is that my tank's colour is slightly yellowish, probably not noticable to anyone other than me.

    what the heck is this?

A sculpin? They're pretty bumpy and spikey. We have them around here in cold water bodies, don't know about Ohio though and I've never seen them a foot long.

    High iron levels in water

A friend of mine is building a house and has decided to build an aquarium into one of the walls complete with a drain and tap for water changes. The water comes from a well and is quite high in iron (makes the toilet bowl orange). Are high iron levels harmful to the fish, or is this maybe...

    Pigmy Freshwater Puffers

Mine will eat flakes but that's only because that's what they were fed in the store. I tend to go with brine shrimp now though. I don't think too many actually like flakes. I agree with Felf with being overstocked, I have 2 dwarf puffers and a bristlenose pleco in a 10

FW clams anyone ever have them? they should be here thrusday

I'm not sure how comparable these species you guys have to some of the FW mussel species I worked with but I work for a conservation authority and we did a lot of work with species-at-risk mussels. I've never kept any in an aquarium but when sampling for them in a river they don't always have...

how to get rid of snails in soft water tank

Smoosh them-good fishie snack. Or i've heard someone else on here suggest leaving a piece of lettuce in your tank overnight and in the morning it should have attracted most of your snails so just remove it.

    Swordtails And Angelfish?

I had red coloured swordtails in with my angels and didn't have a problem.

Dumb question about cleaning animals and filtration

Media is what you put in your filter basket. There are a bunch of different choices such as charcoal, ones that remove phosphates, ones that provide an area for the benficial bacteria (bio-max rings) etc. As severum mama said, the aqua clears have a reuseable sponge block. In my aqua clear...

Dumb question about cleaning animals and filtration

Oh, I forgot to mention cory cats. I had a couple in with my puffers to clean up after them since they are such messy eaters.

Dumb question about cleaning animals and filtration

I haven't had any algae issues with my tank really, maybe just some tiny spots on the glass that I use my magnet scrubber on when I do my vacuuming. Other than that the algae is well in check.

Dumb question about cleaning animals and filtration

I love my ghost shrimp, they do a great job cleaning and are fun to watch. I just found that they got eaten once in a while depending on what you kept them with. I also found ottos to be pretty good cleaners and of course, snails. I'm not a big fan of the alage eaters (not sure which one I...

    canister filters

I got a fluval 204 from Big Al's online- They had the best prices and it was here quick. It was really easy to put together as well- I love mine

    Puffer...

I have a couple of dwarf puffers in a planted tank with a bristlenose pleco and they all get along fine. That being said, I wouldn't keep any other "friends" with puffers.

    Any Platy owners out there?

I had 3 coral platys in my 10 and they were great- lots of personality. With them I had a couple ottos.

    Making my choice in fish...

I'd leave out the puffer. In general, they are too aggressive to keep with other species of fish. That being said, I have never kept leopards, only GSP and dwarf puffers. I have had dwarf gouramis before and loved them. I had them in a community tank with a variety of other fish and never...

    Brackish Testing

I had a brackish tank and my test kit said to use the FW. So, that's what I used and never had any problems.

    Red tailed black shark

All mine gets is regular flake food and once in awhile some frozen brine shrimp. I wouldn't worry too much about food making it "to the bottom" mine comes right up to the surface to feed with my other fish.

    Freshwater River Ecosystem

I'll leave the other questions to someone else but as for the feeding part you'll need to (as you've said) id what you have first and then figure it out. I think you may have to have some benthic inverts but like you said, once they mature you don't want them flying around in your house...

    Freshwater River Ecosystem

This is such a cool project! I work for a conservation authority and we were thinking of doing the same thing only re-creating a riffle instead of a pond. We were interested in looking at the benthic invertebrates and perhaps some species at risk. I'm curious to know what fish you find in...

    Puffers

Thanks, everyone :) Looks like dwarf is the general consensus then, but I may hold off and see if pufferpunk has any advice....

    Puffers

I've decided to try keeping a puffer again after having a couple figure eights awhile ago. My local LFS has Dwarf puffers as well as Green spotted puffers. I was wondering which one is easier to keep. My tank is a 10 gal. and water parameters are as follows: pH 8.0 KH 80 ppm GH 160 ppm I...

Can you give your freshwater fish pieces of bread??

i think bread would be like a treat to them. don't know whether or not it is good for the fish though. a lot of people use bread as bait in minnow traps because they go so crazy over it
