    Thermostat with water temperature probe?

You could use arduino if you know how to code in c++ and wire a pump. I guess it depends on how dedicated you are to do this. Basically you would want to use a thermistor (temperature based resistor) as a way to control the motor as an output.

    Pleco and electricity

Where are you putting the two contacts when you are measuring the voltage? I would test by plugging one pin into the ground of an household appliance plug (the circular prong below the two slots) and the other in the tank water. Anything above 10 volts or so means it is not safe if you are...

    55 planted tank! :)

Some people prefer to dirt their aquarium. Its a cheap way to get a nutrient rich aquarium for heavy planting but it does come with its disadvantages. The two that come to mind (personally i only use PFS) are a heavy nutrient leak at first and its messy when uprooting plants.

Swapping my fluorescent tube for CFLs?

Many times those large cfls dont fit in the hood. In my 10g hood even 13w bulbs barely fit and the hood also can get quite warm so personally i wouldnt recommend it. If i were you i'd probably get a t5ho fixture.

    Alternative to hornwort?

Java moss would be good for hiding your fry if you dont also need something that grows that quickly. It doesnt quite float but a ball of it would do quite nicely in a bottom corner of a tank to hide your fry. Its also pretty hard to kill

    What is happening?

Both the color fade and on one particular fish there is a red spot in its belly. There are 4 of these rasboras in a 10 gallon with some plants.

    Algae Problems

I have 4 Chili Rasboras (or maybe they are Harlequins).

    Algae Problems

I dont have any dirt, but I do put root tabs beneath the plants that are root feeders. I've had horrible luck with both hornwort and anacharis and both of which made a huge mess when dying. I do not dose liquid ferts and am hoping to avoid that because I am off at college so I am trying to keep...

    Algae Problems

Since I started the aquarium, I always had an algae problem, mostly BGA. Now the sand has started to get some black algae growing on it much like how BGA grows but black. The tank is 10 gallons, very lightly planted (as seen in the photos), has two 13 watt spiral bulbs in the hood pointed...

    What is happening?

There has been something going on with my Raspbora for quite a while (a few months or so) which i cant quite seem to figure out. The fish is acting quite normal but I dont know how long long it will live. What can I do to help it?

What keeps driving my pH up?

Are you saying that you PH has made it up to 8.5?

What happens when your nitrates are really high?

How about getting some fast growing plants? They should suck up nitrates fast.

    Heaters

I dont believe that a heater can be strained electronically especially because its job is to make heat. Most electronics have heat as a byproduct of trying to accomplish something else but since the heater is being cooled by the water, its not a problem if its continuously on. Whether or not...

    Urethane foam???

I cant answer the first question but polyfill refers to polyester.

    Filter

You are probably going through a minicycle (shown by cloudy water) and although adding the ceramic media may not help immediately, it is well worth getting. You will probably find it under "aquaclear 70 biomax" because the aquaclear 300 was renamed to 70. What are your water parameters? What is...

    fish died

Recently one of my platies died. It has recently been acting lethargic and its tail fin looked like how it is on the pictures. As far as i can tell it showed no other bad signs. What could have killed it?

Adding extra media to Aqueon Quietflow

What i did with mine was to ditch the cartridge altogether and i put a media bag of biomax to fill the lower third of the blue bio holster, then i put some quilt batting (basically woven floss) and i stuffed that in the top two-thirds of the bio holster in a quantity about as thick as the cartridge.

    Fix for broken filter intake?

I know that my aqueon had a lifetime warranty on all parts of the filter (except for cartridges) so i would look on the box and give aqueon a call.

    Plants

Nope, just make sure that you dont overdose and you will be fine!

    Novice Filtration Question

You can also mod your aqueon to use better media easily. First of all, the carbon supplied in the filter cartridge is not necessary so you can buy some polyester quilt batting (make sure it doesnt have any additives like fire retardants and anti mold stuff which is usually stated on the bag. It...

    AC 50 filter suddenly died

Get another motor and see if that works, if not just get another impeller and use it in the new motor. Also make sure that the impeller is free to spin before buying anything

wet/ dry or hang on back filter.

I am not able to help you with any pump recommendations, but a wet/dry sump is a bad idea with a planted tank because if you ever plan to inject co2 then you will be gassing all of it off with the sump. This is why getting a canister would be a good idea. Also, if you want a HOB over a canister...

    Plantex with potassium sulfate

Yes, there wont be any undesired chemical reactions if you dose them together.
  24. Link119

    Carbon Media

No, it does not remove ions generally so you dont need to worry about it removing your ferts, but it certainly does remove many organic compounds that plants may otherwise use as food. In a planted tank you should not need it IMO.

Fluval FX6, how to go about this beast

Btw 2 1/2in tubes does not equal 1 1in tube in terms of flow capability. Actually, you would need 4 1/2 in tubes to have the same flow of a single 1in tube.
