    Feeding whilst on holiday

I'm due to go away shortly for a week and have just realised what am I going to do with my fish! I have a 17g closed lid tank with assorted freshwater fish, guppies, platy, dwarf gourami, snails, shrimp etc. Question is, can anyone recommend any automatic feeders, slow release food that would...

    Nitrites to Nitrates

I have been running 2 tanks side by side for some 4 months now, 33g and 17g. I cannot seem to get get the 17g cycled. I always have nitrite show up after 4-5 days. I have even moved the much larger filter from the 33g to the 17g, this has made no difference. Incidentally the 33g is still doing...

    All change....

The wife has decided that I have to get rid of my 33g tank :( and I can only keep my 17g. Apparent this is more 'fashionsble' for the new kitchen we are having. I now have to decide which fish to keep and which to rehome. So here's the total stock of both tanks. 2 yoyo loaches 1 female platy 1...

    Have a made an error?

I was having a few cycling issues with my 17g. I couldn't get the nitrites to zero an built up in 4-5 days back to 0.5ppm. To help it out i decided to squeeze the filter media out of my 33g cycled tank. It seemed a good idea at the time. I didn't really anticipate just how much stuff was going...

    Cycling woes

Ok this is getting rediculous now. Had my 65 litre / 17usg tank up and running for 14 weeks now and I am still having cycling issues. It was my very first tank and I did a fish in cycle (I know, I know). Anyway... Ammonia readings have been zero and stayed zero for about 10 weeks, but I cannot...

    Whats your impulse buy?

Just bought a bleeding heart tetra today. I've seen him in the same tank at my lfs for the last 4 months and he's always peaceful with a host of unsuitable tank mates. I would assume he's mature, as around 2" long. All the stock around him have been and gone several times. So today I took pity...

Question i never wanted to ask :(

Here goes. Have a couple of very poorly tetras :( they are not swimming straight, if at all. Just floating and spinning in the current. No sign of damage in any way. I have lost almost half of this batch over the last 2-weeks. They have been like this for about 12 hours now and I can't bear to...

    Cardinal tetra deaths

Does anyone else have problems keeping cardinal tetras? I've had 4 die on me in 3 days for no apparent reason. All levels ok: 0amm, 0trite, 5trate, ph7.2 steady. Tank 3 months old and cycled. Temp 25C. It just doesn't make sense?? They are/were a school of 10 introduced 3-4 weeks ago. Only 6...

    New addition

Was just discussing my 2 tanks with my wife and the subject got on to snails. I mentioned that I was surprised I had none because they can get brought in with new plants etc. at that point I wandered over to my smaller 17g tank and sure enough, there was a small snail crawling across the glass...

    Todays story

Went to my lfs today to grab a few small fish. Sunday is quite a busy day for them and had to wait my turn. Anyway whilst I was being served, there was a group of 3 men browsing the tanks....closely followed by a strong body odour....it was repulsive! They managed to have a whole section to...

    Red eye and rummynose tetras

I have a school of red eyes and love the rummynose look. So would love to add a school of these to my 33g. Has anyone kept red eye tetras with rummynose tetras? Just wondered if they would get along ok. I know red eyes are supposed to be nippy, but I haven't noticed this with mine at all - not...

    Am i stocked?

I have a 65 litre, 17 usg, tall tank containing: 10 cardinal tetras 2 Pygmy cory 5 oto 3 harlequin rasbora All are tiny fish and look at bit lost in the tank. Am I pretty much stocked now? All I really want to add is a few shrimp, but I am led to believe they won't add much to the load anyway.

    Water changes

Water changes are a bit of bind with a bucket and a jug, especially in a larger tank. Does anyone have any tips for making this a little easier?

    Reclaimed 33 gallon

Here are a few pictures of my latest project. This is a used 33 gallon bought recent off eBay. Still awaiting my moonlight LED kit to come, but feel I'm getting there now. Can anyone see or suggest any obvious improvements I could make?

    Cloudy water from sand

Ok I rinsed, rinsed and rinsed, but the water still ended up cloudy. Running the filter, so hopefully will clear overnight. Question is, will this effect the fish? I intended to put a few back in tomorrow, but don't want to if it will harm them in any way.

    Looking to re-arrange

I've had the current setup a while now, but looking to re-arrange a few things. My thinkings are: - the plants at the rear will be cut back and place further to the right. - the fake log will be removed - the large white (fake) stone moved to the left. - taller plants to cover the filter Does...

    Water changes

During water changes i have always tried to match the temperature of tank using the hot water tap. However, I have recently discovered this may introduce heavy metals and that boiled water from a kettle may be more suitable. Does anyone have views on this? What do you lot do?

    Fish missing in action

I have a 17 gallon tank with 5 red eye tetras, 2 platy and 2 yoyo loaches. The last couple of days I have only seen 4 of the 5 tetras and I am at a loss where it could be. The back of the tank is densely planted, but you can normally spot the fish. There is nothing floating or on the bottom. The...

    tetras and harlequins

Does anyone have any experience with nippy tetras, such as red eyes and black skirts, kept with harlequin rasboras? My lfs said they would be fine as long as the tetras were in a school of 6 of each type. Obviously they want my money, so I always take there advice with a huge pinch of salt :S

    LED lighting

Has anyone used the LED lighting strips for aquariums and are they any good? Are they bright enough to replace the main overhead light. Reason I ask is that the hood light on my aquarium is a bit dodgy and was wondering if I could just replace it with one of these?
