From what I've read it can take any where from 4 to 6 weeks for uncured and 1 week for cured.

    UNCURED Branch live rock...good??bad??

The die off is a disadvantage...leads to ammonia spikes. If you have a new tank (wouldn't have to dose as much ammonia)...it would be an advantage.

Hello, new here, and already crashed my tank :(

A higher PH will help and what is your temp? Edit: Never mind, I forgot this was Freshwater...PH is ok.

    Added two clowns today.

My clown (adopted from a tank at work) took a few days to get his normal behavior...freaked me out too.

    redsea's 125g Reef Build

I haven't read the rest of the posts, but would a Flame Hawkfish work? I love mine.

Gary's first dip in the salt (build/journal thread)

It seems like your tests are right if you have a bit of die-off from your live rock. It took me 2 days with a shrimp (my ammonia source) for any ammonia to show up during my cycle.

1.016 too low for QT tank?

    Ammonia was 15-20? There's the problem... :(

New to Salt Water with 75g

I've had the new clown fish for about 5 days now, and he doesn't seem quite so stressed as he was in my boss's fish tank. The hawkfish, Ferno, didn't like the clown near his turf, but other than that, they are getting along great. I plan on adding another clown in a couple of weeks once I get...

    Ammonia

+1 on questionable advice from fish stores...they tend to push people into buying fish.

    Fishless cycling?

I'm in saltwater, but as far as I know...you should still be adding food daily. Just don't let ammonia read over 5ppm.

anyone know how I can get my tank to cycle faster

You're doing fine, just check daily. If you still have ammonia, it's not ready for anything yet.

anyone know how I can get my tank to cycle faster

Check again tomorrow morning, youre ammonia should be going down if you are cycling/cycled.

anyone know how I can get my tank to cycle faster

Both should be read. Anytime you want to add anything to your tank, you should check your water (at least once per week to tell you if you need to do a water change as well).

anyone know how I can get my tank to cycle faster

Seems like you need to do some more reading. :) Cured live rock has the beneficial bacteria already established and there is no more die-off from anything attached to it. One month seems good enough for curing, but someone else might want to chim in with any informational links that may help...

    Start Smart......?

I'm sorry, I thought that was just the 14 gallon. If everything is the same in both tanks including circulation and filtration, I have no answer for you. There's gotta be some sort of surface area of the bacteria to grow...keep that in mind as well.

anyone know how I can get my tank to cycle faster

Was the live rock cured prior to putting it in your aquarium? If not, there will be a lot of die-off.

anyone know how I can get my tank to cycle faster

If you do not have a bacteria source yet, it could take a while...definitely longer than 3 days.

anyone know how I can get my tank to cycle faster

I personally used Bio-spira...I cycled in a week. :) If you have a cover on your tank, you should try to remove it. If you do no have a power head, you may want to try that as well. What's you PH at?

    advice on live rock

Is this a new tank. Do you still need to cycle? If so, you can use the live rock to cycle your tank and use it as an ammonia source. :)

New to Salt Water with 75g

I tried flake food this morning. I'll give him a tiny bit of mysis/brine tonight. I'm also adopting a Clown from my boss's fishtank at work that I will bring home tomorrow (he needs some TLC-see how that works out).

Carey, how long did it take for your fish to get comfortable enough to eat? It's been a day and a half now, and "Ferno" will come out from his rock and just sit but wont swim to the surface to eat. Should I try frozen so it doesn't float?

I ended up getting a Flame Hawkfish last night. He's been in hiding most of the time. He came out last night a bit when I turned off the light.
