Empty ten gallon...give me some ideas.

It's make a nice breeding tank for a pair of German Rams or kribs.

    Attn Floridians!! Francis coming! Help!!!

No it doesn't change anything just remember that you have to act as the filter. Just be careful about excess food or waste and remove it ASAP. We're all hoping the same thing but we'll just have to see what Frances decides to do.

    Pictus Cat, hunter?

Your pim is acting just the way I would expect. If someone led you to believe that they don't eat small fish, they were not correct. They do get about 5 inches or so IME. They also like to be kept in small groups if you have the room. They won't bother larger tankmates at all as a rule. Add some...

    viscous goldfish?

Yes the round bodied, fantail varieties are slower than the normal tailed fish. You can try to feed a mix of sinking and floating foods. But the best thing, if possible, is to have separate tanks for each variety to make sure they all get food.

    Attn Floridians!! Francis coming! Help!!!

When I said freshen the water I meant just to do small partial water changes, maybe a gallon or two. I did this with water I had set aside for the purpose. I also changed the water in the filter the same way, just pour out what's in there and refill it just like TG said. T-Man

    cory cat fins damaged?

No their mouths are quite soft in fact. I've heard of them losing thir "whiskers" to sharp gravel. Their fins have spines that are certainly capable of poking a hole in a plastic bag and if that happened, that might explain the missing finnage. Check the water conditions and do a pwc if needed.

    Fish Crisis!

The first thing I'd do is a pwc of up to 50%. There may be something in the tank or filter that you can't test for. Give the gravel a good vacuum while you're at it. I'd also rinse off any solids that may have accumulated in the filter. I once lost an entire tank of Discus because a visitor's...

    Attn Floridians!! Francis coming! Help!!!

I use the air powered air pumps (get a bunch of spare batteries). I wish they were a lot stronger but they are what they are. As long as you keep the filter media wet, it'll last. Depending on how much spare water you have, you could freshen up the tanks and filters each day. I did that for a...

    Getting the right rocks

It sounds like, at the very least, those rocks will change the hardness in your tank. AS TG says it's stability that you're after. Anything that causes rapid changes in your water chemistry should be avoided as a general rule. I think your bucket test has proven that those particular rocks...

starting up a second tank. questions

Only water chemistry tests can tell you for sure whether the bacteria are keeping up with the bio-load. I've had tanks cycle in a week when properly seeded.

    cory cat fins damaged?

Other fish will nip at the fins (I had a Krib that loved albino cory fins). Acidic water may have an effect too. Once the cause is corrected, they usually grow the fins back easily. If it's not another fish then keep the water as fresh as you can by doing regular pwcs of at least 20% per week...

    Aquarium Algae woes

When you do your regular pwc, make sure to vacuum the gravel extremely well. 3X per day feeding is more than you need. Most folks only feed once a day. Excess food produces phosphates and as it decomposes, nitrates. Green algae feeds off off of both of these. Gravel vacuuming will remove the...

    high water temps.

I agree there seems to be something wrong. You cold just take your thermometer out of the tank and see if it registers the correct room temp. If it seems OK then do as as glasstapper says. I always use two thermometers anyway just in case the heater malfunctions.

    high water temps.

Assuming that you have a tropical tank, 85º is not hot enough to worry about. What is the room temperature? I would just set the heater to about 78º so that temps do not get any lower that that. If you use incandescent lights, switch to florescent and only keep them on when you need to view the...

    redoing tank is ok?

Java Fern is never really going to root at all. They just run surface rhizomes with some very small roots growing out from there. This makes them fairly easy to reposition. I like to tie new plants to a small stone just for that reason. A quick way to kill one of these plants is to bury the...

    Brine shrimp feeder

I thought about using one of these things but after looking at it I decided against it for several reasons. First, its price was more than $20 at my lfs. Next I thought it would look too big and unsightly in a tank. I also thought there would be too great a loss of brine shrimp to filtration...

    What type of sand?

Either way dan. You can buy a 50lb bag of play sand or river rocks from Home Depot for about the same money that you will pay for a 5lb bag of gravel from a lfs. It's all the same for just a few low maintenance plants. It's more a matter of what you think you'd like to look at IMO.

Hey CG, that was some little storm huh? We had no power from Friday, when Charley hit until around noon on Sunday. I ran battery powered air pumps too but would have liked them to be a little more powerful. I did some pwc along the way and all my fish were fine. You're right about the tanks not...

    Algea cleaners....

Amano shrimp are OK as long as you don't have fish big enough to eat them and you don't feed them too much other food. If they feed on enough fish food, they tend to lose interest in algae but they are certainly an interesting option.
