    Slight Ammonia level

Does it always have to be 0 for an ammonia reading? When I test my water, it's always hard to tell if the API test is coming uo 0 or .25. The shading is hard to read. If it's .25 is that harmful for the fish?

    My new 5 Gallon tank

I probably will go with just a Betta. But it is funny how I get lots of comment from people who are telling me 3 fish in this tank would be cruel and yet some of these people have given advice to people on doing a cycle with fish recommending getting a few hardy fish to cycle your tank & some...

Is 5 gallons really the minimum for FISH?

There is another example of different opinions. I've had moderators on 2 different fish forum sites saying the plan I had (& I did emphasize that it will be a planted aquarium with 2 or more water changes & gravel cleaning each week) and both said that this plan should be OK. (BTW the Julii...

Is 5 gallons really the minimum for FISH?

I'm only saying that everyone has seems to have different opinions on the hobby and how to maintain tanks. I've been reading many sites and read many books since I started and one thing I've seen there is a million contradictory opinions. As an example, some sites say you should keep the fish...

Is 5 gallons really the minimum for FISH?

I am a newbie and am currently doing a fishless cycle on my 5 gallon tank. You will find a lot of opinions here saying that you can only put 1 fish in a tank this size. There are some who have more than that and have said that they have done well. I think you could do a few small fish as long as...

    My new 5 Gallon tank

It will be just a Betta tank. Everyone is telling me that it is too small too add the platy and molly I was planning also, so it will be just 1 betta and a snail.

    Ph testing question

I have the API Testing kit. Do you run the low PH & high PH tests together. The bottles don't say "bottle #1 & bottle #2" so I'm thinking you don't use both bottles together. If the color doesn't match anything on the chart with one does that mean the other one is the true reading of PH?

    Cyling levels so far

Sorry to be a bother, but someone else on these boards said I shouldn't even worry about the PH till I'm ready to add fish. Also someone else said 4.0 is too much ammonia for a 5 gallon tank and that I should get it down to 1.0. Should I do a large water change 50% to get it down? Or will it go...

    Cyling levels so far

The only thing I added to the water when I started was Stresscoat. I added pure ammonia the first day to get it up to 4.0. on the 4th day i started to get readings on the nitrite test (my tank has been running at 82 degrees and I've added a few flakes of food the first 3 days to get the bacteria...

    Cycling diary (help needed)

I'm new and fishless cycling my 5 gallon tank, and after 5 days I was showing a nitrite level of 5.0. But I started at an ammonia level of 4.0 to get the bacteria started. I also dropped in a few flakes of food each day for the first five days. I also have the temperature around 82 which I was...

    Let's get your blood boiling...

Even worse there's a 30 gallon tank in my local Chinese noodle take-out place where I live and they have 5 Koi (all about 8"!) in this tank. Also on Youtube there is a guy who has about a 20 gallon tank & there must be 30 fish in it! And he keeps telling everyone they're fine!

    Controlling Temperature With Water Changes

So I'm into my first week of cycling and everything is going good so far. The only thing is the temperature in the tank is around 80 degrees at night and goes up to 84 in the day when I have the tank lights on (I do have live plants, so this is necessary). If I do a partial water change each...

    Betta purchase

I don't think it really matters. I will be buying one in a few weeks (once my tank is cycled) and I've seen active healthy ones in both the clear & blue water cups. The only thing tough is to see the actual color of the fish in the blue ones.

    Tank Water Tamp

I am new to this but I also have a high temperature. Mine runs about 83 degrees with the lights on. If I were you I wouldn't even keep the heaters on right now. Your room or area whers e you live might be running warm. A lot of people who live in warm areas say they don't even run the heaters in...

    Cooler Lights?

I have a 5 gallon marineland Hex tank. The bulb in it is only a 15 watt compact fluorescent. It gets pretty hot and heats up the water. Is there any kind of bulb that runs cooler. My bulb seems to heat up the tank to 83 degrees after 8 hours with no heater on.

4th Day Fishless cycle -Ammonia 8.0+

Thanks Thanks. I wound up doing almost all water change (I left the gravel & whatever water any in the gravel. I refilled & used Aquasafe and without adding ammonia, I got a reading of 2.0 so I added a about 10 drops of ammonia and it brought the level to 4.0. Thanks for the advice.
