If it's possible to jump right to a 20 long I would. A buddy breeds them in 20s and loves that size due to not having to worry about over crowding. He also sells privately and to the lfs in town

They self regulate themselfs if you have a boom of snails in an established tank 95% of the time you are over feeding. As you fishless cycle you will get a boom due to the algae bloom your almost bound to get. I like it cause they are cleaning it up for free :) and as some of your plants leaves...

Ammonia will not kill them. I am fishless cycling at 4-5 ppm and my snails are reproducing at a feverish pace. But they are getting the algae in check so I'm cool with it

Oh and at the start WC are normal and after it stabilized (3-8 months ) water changes I've read being up to 6 months apart. But that requires a TDS meter and testing weekly I've read of them going as far as having the ammonia nitrite nitrate monitors that are always on $$$$$$$

Check out theplantedtank forum. It can and does work BUT you must do your research as I believe its low lighting and proper plant selection and growing plants above water last but not least proper stocking of fish. It's a down the road thing I may try. If I were in your shoes and if she lives...
