Doing a substrate change - Update - With pics!!

little late, but I would have suggested rinsing the new substrate first...it'll be murky water for awhile otherwise.

    Aquarium design

I'm starting a new 65g and am trying to get a nice "bushy" plant growth. I've seen many aquarium shots where the plants cover almost the whole aquarium; however, in my 45g the plants just seem to grow straight up and never get that "bushy" look. If I plant them close together to try and create...

Help with a compete planted overhaul

don't forget that the quote above says that 40-50 pounds of the aquatic would do your tank - that's about $50 vs the Eco's $140. Great post - lots of fantastic info. Although now I want to start all over again too... and I just finished putting it all together.

    Fishless cycling

ok - that's closer to the answer I was looking for... to be more precise - Do I dose every day regardless of the reading? Or do I wait until it reads 0, then dose again. Wait until it reads 0, then dose again, etc. until I dose and it reads 0 in 24 hours? Then check nitrites. I'm not sure about...

    Fishless cycling

the ammonia has no additives, just water & ammonia. The tank is still showing ammonia after 24 hours though, so I don't think the tank is cycled. Nitrites are at .5 on the chart, so they're up a little. My guess is that the Aquarium Pharm test is the more accurate of the two tests.

    Fishless cycling

ok...can't stand the mystery any longer and need some experienced information. I've got a new 65g. Filled with water, dechlorinated, put in rocks (hard) and plants (it's freshwater for tropicals). I've read several articles on fishless cycling, so figured I'd give it a try. I took the ceramic...

    Any idea what this is?

eggs Awesome folks! Thanks for the replies. Now the wife can rest easy that it's not some "horrible thing" :) I suspect, however, that the clown loach will take care of these guys before they get too big... Any way to keep them safe?

    Any idea what this is?

I have two of them in my tank - outside the water. One on the glass and one on the T-bar supporting the light. I have snails, and a variety of fish, but this is just weird...

    Wanting to start an aquarium

I'm still fairly new to fish keeping (about 2 years) and I'd side with getting a little larger tank to start (29 vs 10/20). Also, I'd add what nobody else has said - make a deal with yourself to give it a couple years or that you won't quit. Setting up the aquarium will require some work and...

Need to build a tank for 3 foot Monster Pacu.

Here's a link to some really big fish (pacu is first). Explains why you'll want some space. http://s9.invisionfree.com/Canadian_Aquatics/index.php?showtopic=31 This guy has grabbed some photos of fish that are sold which no doubt shouldn't be.

Need suggestions for little fish with BIG personalities!

My clown loach has a ton of personality and my golden wonder killie - unfortunately, they're more than 2" - killie is only about 4" and I think there are other dwarf loaches that might fit the bill. I hear loaches are a very personable lot in general. Lots of folk have a real affinity for otos...

    photographing your aquarium..

I use a Canon S1 IS, pictures are highest quality, about mid-size. I try not to use any zoom, just makes it harder to focus. I use autofocus. Take a ton of pictures. I leave the interior lights on and don't use the flash. I have a fast shutter setting that I use.

    killifish

I've had one for awhile and can testify to their hardiness. However, you'll want to make sure that nothing in your tank will fit in his mouth. He's eaten (I believe) all six of my juvie SAEs. Possibly some male guppies too. Stays at the top almost all the time. Hardly bothers anybody. Is quite...

Fish that swim mid to upper tank?

barring any small fish in the tank, the golden wonder killie stays on the surface about 95% of the time. Not an aggressive fish, but if anything small comes to the surface and will fit in it's mouth, it will eat it.

    Golden Wonder Killie warning

lmw80 - I have a lfs that I think will take him. Question is now, do I just give up on the last SAE (I think he ate the other 5) and keep the killie until he expires - maybe another year (I heard they only live a couple years)? Or see if the lfs will take him and get some SAEs again... The GWK...

    Golden Wonder Killie warning

ok - this is now the most infuriating thing in the tank yet. Worse than the dang algae. Worse than the mysterious deaths. My GW Killie is slowly eating all of my cotton picking SAE's! It's not like they didn't cost about $45 and he cost $3. They eat the nasty hair algae and he's...

    Serpae Tetra ???

I've had between 1-4 of these guys in the tank and they've always kept to themselves and rarely chased anybody. Of course, I have a 46g tank and they always had plenty of room. I'd lean towards just an over aggressive one. Give the others someplace to hide and it might cease.

    DIY CO2 with powerhead

Here's the one I made and use: http://www.qsl.net/w2wdx/aquaria/diyco2.html The powerhead pulls water into the Python gravel vac and the CO2 is pushed into the same tube. The CO2 is churned with the water and the tiny bubbles usually come out from the bottom. Works well... I believe I'm going...

    Tank Algae

tank algae It's an imbalance of some sort. I can't say what, but algae thrives/grows when the environment doesn't suit the plants as well as it suits the algae. I think one of the typical things is not enough nitrate compared to phosphates, so the plants don't have the nitrates to use to...
