i got some riccia. i used hairnets to attach it to some lacerock. and this afternoon, when i came back, i found that one of my VERY favorite plecos--an L333--had gotten caught up in the hairnet and was trapped! he was still alive, and i was able to cut him free. i hope he survives--he seems ok...
i'm sitting here next to my now dark tank, listening to my loaches CLICKING! i had heard that they make this noise, but i had never heard it before. my main set of lights were off, and the secondary set were still on, and i threw a few algae wafers in the tank, and all of a sudden it's a chorus...
i suspect that one of my praecox rainbows has internal parasites, as his poohis white and stringy. if i can't manage to quarantine him (which i may not be able to do) and he dies in my tank, can the parasites infect my other fish?
hey all,
i have 2 big silver dollars that i can no longer hold on to. before i take them to the lfs, i wanted to know if anyone wants them. they are fairly agressive--NOT community fish--would go well with other slightly aggressive fish--and are about 4".
i kind of don't want to part with...
just thought i'd share a few pics of the inhabitants of my 125g.
my new (and much beloved) red whiptail catfish (L010a--rineloricaria sp.). they seem to really like the powerhead.
mr. green (green phantom--L200--hemiancistrus subviridis). also in the picture: mustard spot pleco...
it was time. cat's tank 1.0 needed an upgrade. with the help of some expert critiques from some aa'ers, i took the bull by the horns and did it. not just moving a few things around mind you--i ripped everything out, plants driftwood rocks--changed the substrate--and redesigned!
below is a short...
i now have 2 brands of nitrate test kits.
the old kit that i've been using since the tank was set up is tetratest--it goes increments of 0, 12.5, 25, 50, 100.
my test results always hover between 12.5 and ~20ppm. today they read a clear 12.5ppm
i just got the ap test (for comparison) and my...
i want to use a plastic 2 liter soda bottle (cut in half) to make a barrier between my prefilter sponges and my built-up substrate. a friend of mine mentioned to me that plastic leaches chemicals into the water.
anyone know any more about this?
i just got a shipment of plants. a lot of them came with lead weights on them. the shipper says he never takes the weights off. i usually do--but he's really knowledgable, so now i'm questioning.
what does everyone else do? on or off?
just had to share...
i just saw my cae pushing an empty apple snail shell (prey to the clowns) across the tank floor. too funny--he looked just like a performing seal!
omg--he just did it again! hahahahahaha! wasn't there that thread about fish intelligence and training fish? maybe i can have...
my tap water has a kh of about 2dkh. when i initially set up my tank, i filled one of my filter baskets with cc and raised the dkh to 10. i then kept my ph at 6.9/7.0 where i was getting about 30ppm of co2.
after cleaning both my filters, and after an outbreak of bga (which is gone thankfully...
my 125g has been up for about 6 months. i think it's doing pretty well--but i feel like i've hit an aquascaping plateau. i have a fair variety of plants, but mostly tall ones. i've been trying to get a carpet to grow, but have been having some trouble with an inch of gravel over 2.5 inches of...
so i found out something cool--and forgive me if y'all knew this before--i'm just kind of psyched...
today i went to do a water change with my python, and the conector thingy between the gravel vac and the rest of the hose--y'know--the thing with the white lever on it that you can use to...
so i bought 6 kuhli loaches and 2 angelicus loaches yesterday (broke EVERY one of my rules--no buying from petland, no buying fish that JUST got put in the tanks--but they were REALLY nice!)
i put them in a qt tank so i can observe to make sure they're ok. one of the kuhlis died within an hour...
if it's not one thing, it's another!
i just discovered i have cyanobacteria, and i have a few questions...
so far i haven't seen it on the substrate, but now realized that i've seen patches of it between the glass and substrate for a while. it may have been there for quite some...
so i dry dose K. i take a cupful of tank water, add my dry k2s04 and stir. then i pour it into the aquarium. i try to evenly distribute it as i pour. as we all know, k2s04 doesn't dissolve real well in water. so my question is, do the plants that get the k poured directly on them get fetilized...
i've been using the tetra test kit, which has 3 vials of liquid reagent and one vial of zinc. but i've become increasingly frustrated because their color scale jumps from 12.5 to 25ppm, and it's really hard to pinpoint at what level the nitrate really is. does anyone have any recommendations on...
aaaaauuuuugh--so aggravating! need help! i just want a pretty tank, where everyone is happy and healthy! to me it looks like a k deficiency. i recently reduced k dosing because i was accidentally triple-dosing. as of today, i am increasing the dose from 20ppm after a water change to 40ppm. but i...
help!
i just came home to find that my co2 setup is not working! i have a milwaukee controller/monitor and regulator with solenoid and bubble counter and a 20lb co2 tank (exactly the same as madafish's article). all valves are wide open and i'm getting about 1 bubble/2 secs. my ph is at 7.7. so...
ok, it's my turn. a big THANK YOU goes out to travis for his generosity and fabulousness! and guess what??? i dosed nitrates for the first time yesterday! finally my plants are hungrier than what my messy fish produce!
check it out--comments welcome! especially looking for good ideas on where...
ok--it's my second attemp with glosso. i spent 3 hours yesterday cutting runners into individual plantlets, and carefully planting the plantlets with tweezers. (keep your fingers crossed...)
my question is this...i planted some of the glosso near a patch of hemianthus callitrichoides. is there...
