My canister is hooked up to the same plug thing that my thermometer and lights are hooked up to. Everything goes off when I do maintenance. I'm not taking any chances.

I use backgrounds on all my aquariums. On the 75 G I have a mat black with very pretty muted fern-like background that I got at Petsmart. It really enhances the rainbow fish and hides the cords. I just tape it on, easy to remove if I want.
Sorry about the bad luck you have had with your filter. I have an Eheim 2028 Pro on my 75 gallon. The tank is on a wrought iron stand and I have the filter in a big terra cotta pot. It is SILENT. Not even a teenie echo from inside the pot. You get what you pay for.
If you're in the South, Publix also has their own brand of plain amonia. I am also in the process of cycling a 75 gallon lightly planted aquarium and had to use 10 drops per 10 gallons to get to 5ppm. :D
