Adding baking soda to increase KH

Yeah, I test both regularly. Boston's tap water has a pH of about 7.8, KH of about 80-100 ppm and is moderately soft, with a GH of around 75 ppm. When I do 25% water changes, the pH and KH readings are very low. KH is around 20ppm and pH is around 6.0. When I added the baking soda, the KH rose...

Adding baking soda to increase KH

I just added 1tsp (mixed with tank water) to my 10g tank and the rasboras started freaking out, going for the surface and darting around. I did an immediate 25% water change and they seem fine now. Any ideas why they would freak like this? I did it a few days ago too (though I used a bit less...

Yes, there is plenty of air in it, a few plants too.

    Crazy Gourami

Nitrites are 0, ammonia is not, it's about 1.0 PPM, but I have been treating it with ammo lock regularly since the spike. I just added 1/2 tablespoon of aquarium salt. I'll see what that does and to a pwc tomorrow. Thanks for the advice.

    Crazy Gourami

Yeah, the tank is a year old, the fish about 8 months, 10 gallons.. I did a pwc the other day and took the carbon from the filter cause I was treating the tank. The quailty is okay, save for a somewhat low pH (6.5) and KH (about 40ppm), but that is nothing new, so I'm not too sure what the...

    Crazy Gourami

I have a gourami that is sick. He was flipping out yesterday, darting around the tank to take long rests on his side on the bottom and then darting around again. He did this a few weeks ago as I was going to bed and I thought it was the end, but when I got up the next day, he was fine. He...

    When changing the filter media...

No, it just has the bio bag, but come to think of it, I think one can buy a sponge to put into the filter.

    When changing the filter media...

Its a really cheap Whisper 10, so it all comes out when changing. It seems to do the job though (10 gallon community tank).

    When changing the filter media...

...is it a good idea to leave the old media in the tank to allow the new media to grow the bacteria colonies? I haven't changed it in months and have been rinsing and "cleaning" it in the newly removed water as I do changes, but it's getting so very little water will pass through the media, so I...

    Ghost shrimp?

Cool, thanks. Would a dozen be too many for ten gallons?

    Ghost shrimp?

I am thinking of getting a couple or three ghost shrimp for my aquarium (10 gal), but am a little worried about compatibility with the other fish, especially the dwarf gourami and black molly. Will they get eaten? I have read conflicting comaptibility lists. Can anyone offer any advice?

    Virgin birth?!

Thanks. Mother Nature is a mad scientist I guess! Here I was ready to start a whole new religion... :D

    Virgin birth?!

My black molly had babies. I don't know how, I have had it for months and it is the only molly in my aquarium (10 gallons w/five harlequin rasporas, a zebra danio and a dwarf gourami). I was doing a little light maintenence and saw three 1/3 inch long black fry swimming around. They aren't fat...
