What in the world is wrong with my Golden Algae Eater?

My GAE stopped eating about a week ago, and 2 days ago I woke up to him looking terrible. He went from solid yellow to covered in black literally overnight. He's much more active than he used to be, and I've read that they can change colors, but the loss of appetite concerns me. All parameters...

    ammonia cycling 180gal freshwater

I am "attempting" to cycle a 180 gal fw tank. I am using the fishless/ammonia method. I started the process on 12/15/13. The closest that I can figure is that 1.75 oz ammonia brings the tank to about 4ppm. So far, my nitrites are holding steady at "off the scale" (API test kit, deep purple...

The tank is 6' x 2' x 2'. So far, I've looked at 2 fixtures- first, a quad T5HO fixture (used, 2 80watt 10K...

    fluidized bed filter question

I have a couple of questions concerning a specific fluidized bed filter. I have 2 Red Sea Merlin 120 fluidized bed filters (old-school, I know!) that I'm setting up. These filters are brand-new/old (probably close to 15 years, but never used. Unfortunately, I don't have the boxes for them any...

    Regulator for CO2 system

Question- is it necessary to have one of the electrically-powered regulators for a CO2 system or can I just use a regular one and connect a bubble counter inline with the output? I have a regulator that was used in a home-brew setup, so I wanted to utilize that if possible. Thanks for the help...

Hello all, new member here from Raleigh, NC. Got back into aquariums last year after my GSD passed away, needed something to feed and spend money on! I am currently running a 65gal fw planted setup, but I am in the process of setting up a 180gal fw drilled tank setup. I put my substrate in...
