    29gal tall build thread

I've got a similar set-up. It's a 29 with cories, cardinal tetras, and cherry barbs. The cories have a nice tumble-bumble personality. The cardinals & cherries bring a nice color to the planted tank. My "center piece" is a bolivian ram. He/she is not the most vibrant (only about 8 months...

    Cory Cat and Betta compatibility?

I've got a blue betta & 4 albino cories in a 10g. They get along well. For the most part, the betta sticks to the top while the cories stick to the bottom. About the only time they interact is during feeding time. The betta will go down, taste the corys' sinking pellet, and then spit it out...

    Cory swimming all over tank?

My albinos (10g tank w Betta) are pretty mellow, except at feeding time. Then they start forging around for the food. And next thing you know, they are all after the same bit even though another piece is nearby. My julii/trils (29g community) started off very, very active. They would swim up...

Is purigen worth the extra money?

I use a few inches of a nylon stocking and tie knots on the ends. Haven't had any problems. I also don't recharge mine. I just toss stocking & all. I don't want to take chances with the chlorine. But regarding whether it's worth it or not--I can see a big difference in my water quality...

    help with lowering nitrites

I had a similar situation. I had a tank that was set-up that I was pretty sure had cycled. And after adding some fish, I had a nitrite spike. My guess is that my bacterial colony hadn't reached a sufficient size to handle the new fish. You would have never guessed it from the fish. They...

Do you need to float the bag before drip acclimation?

It shouldn't matter much in terms of temperature changes whether you wait or begin the drip right away. Personally, I like to go in slow gradual steps to minimize stress.

    Water wisteria

I felt the same way at first. Trim off the BOTTOM half and throw it away? That's where all my roots are! It's crazy.

    Is aqua bid safe?

"Buy it now" is the same as a "no haggle price". i.e. there's no auction involved and nobody will be bidding higher.

    Potassium Permanganate

I've only read about 3 ways to kill snails and their eggs--bleach, potassium permanganate, and alum. I used alum on mine and it worked for me.

    Potassium Permanganate

Here's a good article on the use & cautions of potassium permanganate. It mentions that Vallisneria is sensitive to it: Potassium permanganate | The Skeptical Aquarist

Bottomline: do Betta fish need a heater to thrive?

There's not a firm answer because conditions vary so much. The temp in my house is fairly stable year round (70s). So I can get away with not using a heater. Now for the OP's home, I'd definitely use one during fall & winter.

How to use RO water in planted tank

I tested my gh & kh with 100% tap, 75% tap/25% ro, 50% tap/50% ro, and 25%tap/75%ro. Once I figured out where I wanted to be, I just did my partial weekly water changes with 100% ro. After a few weeks, my tank was where I wanted it to be and I started doing my water changes with the mix of tap...

    GBR source

A couple of months ago there was a thread on GBRs and someone posted a link to a good source. They used European stock and good breeding practices. And it seemed like this was the only breed they dealt with. It wasn't Wetspot, LiveAquaria, or the other big well known links. Naturally I lost...

Need advice for switching to live plants

While you're looking, take a peek at this site too for ideas: Live Aquarium Plants They have a lot of plants broken down by categories (lighting, foreground/background, etc). I've ordered from them and been happy with my plants. I'm still new to planted tanks. But from my experience, low...

How many hrs should I keep my tank lights on

When my tank was unplanted with the weak hood light, we never paid attention to the time that the tank light stayed on. It was probably 12-14 hours. Now it's planted and I have a medium-high light and I have to stick to around 7hrs or I get a problem with algae.

    Otocinclus and Corydora?

I love corys. The fact that they'll eat food that falls to the bottom is just a bonus. But they remind of beagles with their nose to the ground and how they tumble-bumble around.

What can live in a vase

I had a betta in a one gallon vase on my desk. I didn't know better at the time. I wouldn't call it cruel. We kept each other company. It had a peace lily at the top with roots that dangled down. He would often explore the nooks & crannies of the roots, at a very slow pace. And I'd change...

    Otocinclus and Corydora?

I know some folks have had good success with otos. But I'm not one of those people. I've got some japanese trapdoor snails that do an okay job. They're nice in that they don't leave eggs everywhere. What I really want is the pitbull pleco. They are oto-sized and algae eaters. And...

Can you use table salt as a substitute to aquarium salt?

As long as it's food grade salt, there's not a significant difference between any of the salts. Technically, ordinary table salt will have trace amounts of anti-caking compounds. Likewise, the iodine that's added to iodized salt is very minimal. Kosher salt generally does not have additives...

    Who uses Quarantine Tanks?

Yes and no. Definitely treat the fish, regardless of the plants in the QT. But there's no reason why you can take cuttings from your main tanks and having them grow in QT. If the plants die to treatment, so be it. You can regrow more. Personally I think a planted tank is less stressful for...

    Who uses Quarantine Tanks?

I don't. I didn't even know you were supposed to until I started reading the forums on planted tanks. I haven't had any problems until this past round when my otos got ick. One day I hope to have a 20g long that's primarily a planted tank, but occasionally serves as QT/HT.

    Corydoras and betta

I've got a 10 gallon planted. I put the female betta in first and a couple of weeks later added 4 albinos. My betta was curious about the new additions, but left them alone. She pretty much ignores them except at feeding time. When I drop the cory wafer, she'll go down & check it & maybe do...
