Ok, my 180 gallon plywood project is underway. Its going to take me a while to complete because of my work schedule, which gives me plenty of time to think. I've decided to stock " new world" cichlids. I'm really loving the andinocara rivulatus. I'd like to add a few more medium/large guys to the mix. I'm staying away from the huge monsters (dovii, umbee etc). My question is what will mix well? I don't mind some aggression and scrapping. Any suggestions and advice will be considered and appreciated.

Jealous - wish I was doing my 180 again from scratch. Nothing like a big tank build.

Tell us a little more about what you kind of fish you like. rivulatus should work with a lot different medium aggression cichlids. If you like rivulatus, make sure you get that and not the gold saum.

Here would be some recommendations to look into:

Herichthys species
Cryptoheros species
Thorichthys species

For a larger and more aggressive tank you could look as some of the smaller Cichlasomas (e.g., salvini) or paratheraps species.

and who doesn't like a good pike (Crenicichla). With a tank that size you could do a nice Lugubris.

I'm really liking herichthys cyanoguttatus (I am from Texas) and paratheraps fenestratus. A shop in my area has what they claim to be true amphilopus labiatus. Would they be ok, or are they really just too mean?

That's a easy question to answer...me!

This will be dealt with later. Besides, don't I remember you eyeing up some compressiceps?

Take a picture of it and post it on here. There are some members that can spot a fake RD a mile away.

Will do, next time I'm out that way.

I'd say a labiatus is still gonna be too aggressive for a rivulatus, they typically aren't too aggressive

Something you don't see much of are Asian tanks. Some etroplus maculatus, etroplus suratensis and a large school of puntius denisonii would be pretty cool. I know I have just completely sold out my buds in the sa/ca group but that tank would look pretty unique.

What about nandopsis beani or grammodes?

I've never kept grammodes but the beani are cool. They are very conspecific aggressive. I had a group of 6 when the dominate male killed off all but 2. The remaining beani are all in separate tanks now. The dominate male died inexplicably about 3 weeks ago.

I would look into something not only stunning but unique and somewhat uncommon, why settle and waste a large tank for fish that can be purchased at Petsmart.

I would look into Paraneetroplus gibbiceps(one of my favorites).

Parachromis 'Red Tiger' Motaguense.

Parachromis loisellei.

Astatheros robertsoni.

Good point HUKIT. All the fish you listed are very beautiful specimens. I'm still way early in my process so, I'll change my mind a lot. Who knows, I might end up with a single Dovii and call it a day. Lol! Not likely.
