I'd say your "mystery snails" are pond snails... But I can't verify without a picture. My LFS gives them away free as well.

Can pond snails live in warm water with fish?

They are very hard to get rid of once they have settled in. Like I said I can't prove its a pond snail without a pic.

I tried moving some red cherry shrimp into a 5G with a beta, and he picked them off in short order. Waiting for plants to establish and provide more cover before I try that again.

If you want to get shrimp I think you should try it out first with ghost shrimp because those are cheap and if the betta doesn't like it idk you wouldn't have spent a lot of money on the fancy ones
