55 gallon aquarium

Hey first I would like to let everyone know that I'm new to this form and if I lack with information plz forgive me as I'm trying to learn more about this great hobby well I have a 55 gallon aquarium I'm trying to set it up as african chiclids tank I need to put sand at the bottom I heard about the pool filter sand but I'm not sure if it help keep the ph high and I'm trying put a big driftwood and some caves in the corner of the tank as I don't like the way of rocks stacked in the middle of the tank I'm running 2 marineland emperor 400 so i got plenty of water flow and i have wall air stone on the hole background of the aquarium I need to get some info if I'm doing stuff right and any ideas would be really appreciated.

What a lot of us do is pick whatever sand you want and add a bag of crushed coral to the filter or hide a bag in the tank.
