What native fish could I put in a 55 gallon tank?

As stated, what you can add, really depends on where you are located. Many varieties of sunfish and bullhead catfish will do ok in a 55 gallon.

I'm in New England, plenty of bass, perch, sunfish, bull head, and blue gills

Do a stream set up with dances, darters and minnows. Look Jonha's Aquarium or Zimmermans. You will see some super cool possibilities.
