Just finished planting my tank yesterday and I was curious as to how long I should wait before adding fish. The guy at my LFS said that I should wait awhile for the plants to grow in (the baby ones) as to prevent the fish, when added, from eating the leaves and such. I have swords and ferns with a 17w flora sun bulb going in my 30g freshwater tank. Im also looking for some fish ideas as I'm trying to do a community tank with possibly 1 or 2 showcase fish.

I replant things, especially stem plants, all the time so of course I have fish when I plant the stems which have no roots at all. Fish that uproot plants or eat plants are going to do that regardless.

As long as your tank is cycled it's okay to add fish.

A quick Google search of "fish-in cycling" &"fishless cycling" will set you on the right path..the advice by the guy at your lfs was ignorant at best..

sit in silence...
