Make sure it doesn't have an anti mold or flame retardant sprayed on it.

a lot of people do use cheap basic polyester fillings as an alternative as long as it's not treated with anything. Should say if it is otherwise it would be plain. Most people usually toss it and add new ones every time they clean the filter because it's cheap and doesn't clean out as well as the expensive "made for aquirum" kinds since the cheap kind is softer.
