Try looking up some species of snails or loaches. I would pinpoint you to some of them but I honestly don't know much about them. I read that both if these are good for sand sifting on a forum for this exact website.

By the way, I just found out that Hone Depot is selling 50LB bags of play sand for $3.67 each!
