I realize most cichlids need a lot of space, but are there any species that could live alone or in a pair (male-female or female-female, I don't really want to breed though) in a 10 gallon tank? I have pretty hard water, around 7.6-7.8.
There are some. Probably the best fit for a 10g would be shell dwelling cichlids from lake tanganyika. Multis, Ocies, and Brevis are the most popular. I had a colony of multis. they're neat little fish. You could start with about 6 or 8 and eventually you'll have quite a few
