I was just wondering if a ballast gets too hot will it cause the lights not to work. I have the ballast out in the open (so its not enclosed) but I don't have a fan on it. Could it still get too hot to function. I know ballasts get really hot, which this one is, but to me it's not getting any hotter than the other ballast I have and that one works fine. Both ballasts are brand new. It is part of a DIY lighting project that I put together. TIA

Found the answer for myself....I just propped the ballast up on some blocks of wood and presto, they started working again and seem to be doing fine. yay

Sounds like you should rewire them, if you move it and it fires up....there is probably a loose connection somewhere.

Most electronic ballasts have a high temp limit switch that is supposed to trip the ballast if it gets too hot. If it's getting hotter than the other identical ballast, I would suspect something is causing it as Kevin said. The ballast, if mounted in the open, should not need a fan and should not get hot enough to trip the limit switch.
