green are emmersed growth and the colorful is immersed growth.. you can trim the greens away as they will start melting soon.. I've not heard much positive feed on the longevity of those plants though..

I grew a banana plant in plain gravel, no ferts, under a standard T-8 bulb and it did fine. Some of the shoots developed into 4" round floating leaves and when I separated them from the stem (left about 1-2" of stem attached) that leaf developed into an entirely new plant. Sometimes I would clip all surface seeking shoots to promote the growth of submerged leaves. Ironically, when I upgraded the lights and started using ferts, it died off. It was a couple of years old.
