Best Way to Test Water Quality?

In most of the posts I see, members are quoting quantitative results for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, etc. (e.g. xx PPM). I am using Tetra 5-in-1 strips that have a subjective color chart, and frankly I'm not sure of the results at all.

What test system would you recommend?

I have a fairly small (20g) freshwater setup.

Most lfs have them. I got mine for a much better price on eBay with no shipping charge.
