Common name: Blackspotted Topminnow
Scientific name: Fundulus Olivaceous
Native range: As far east as western GA, AL, FL panhandle and west to parts of TX, MO, OK, KS. Also northward into southern IL and KY.

Native habitat: Commonly found in areas with moving water. Sometimes near vegetation, this fish stays at the surface and is easy to see.

Compatible tankmates: Community tank friendly, works well with similarly sized fish. Since it spends most of its time at the surface it does not interact very often with mid/bottom dwellers.

Recommended tank size: 20 gallon or larger would be ideal.

Size: Usually around 2 to 2 1/2" fully grown

Diet: This species readily accepts flakes and pellets. In the wild, it eats insects and has been reported to eat diatoms as well.

Description: Like other killifish, this species is long and slender. It has an olive green color along the top half of it's body and a white bottom half. This is separated by a black line that is jagged in appearance when seen up close. It also has several small black spots.

Behavior: A calm fish, they like to school slowly near the surface. They adapt to tank life really well, and come right up front at feeding time. Because they spend almost all of their time at the surface, they make a good addition to most tanks that are lacking a true topswimmer.

Reproduction: Has been reported to scatter eggs in gravel.

General: Another very underrated fish with a lot of potential. This particular fish is a good choice if you want a school of fish that spend their time primarily at the surface. Because of their size, they work well in larger tanks as well.
