(Six banded distochodus Distichodus sexfasciatus)

Synonyms: N/A

Common Names: none known

Category: Characin

Family: Distichodontidae

Origin: Congo river and Lake tangayika

Main Ecosystem: river basins and large lakes

Salinity: pure freshwater

Temperment: relatively peaceful though is prone to nipping fins and can be aggressive towards fish that look similar

Diet: Omnivorous but prefers vegetation over meaty foods.

Care: a relatively hardy fish that doesn’t require anything special besides large living quarters and vegetable based diet.

pH: (anywhere from 6.8-7.5)

Temperature: 70-80 degrees

Hardness: 2-15 dGH

Potential size: can attain a size of 30 inches however captive specimens tend to slow down at 10-15 inches

Water Region: middle to bottom of the tank will actively be shifting between the two

Activity: quite active and inquisitive but occasionally will hide

Lifespan: 7-10 years
Color: juveniles display bright orange bodies with black stripes and bright red fins. However as it matures it will become dark red or black and loose the bright orange however some adults may keep the orange color.

Mouth: unlike most characins their mouths are downturned so they can eat vegetation

Sexing: males and females are identical

Acclimation: regular drip acclimation will work when introducing them. The fish may be shy for the first month and become more active as time goes on.

Breeding: as of current this fish has never been bred successfully in the hobby.

Comments: it should be noted that this fish will come in at 2-3 inches in length but this fish is only for large aquariums.
While it’s peaceful it’s behavior is very different with the individual with some being very shy and placid, from being a bully that nips fins, to a fish that will outright kill fish that look similar so while my personal experience with this fish has shown peaceful behaviors i can’t say that your experience will be identical due to its unpredictable personality.
