IS there any way to get rid of the brown algae? We don't have live rock - just an Eiheim filter and dead corals. This is a fish aquarium only.

You could employ a few herbivorous snails.

Do the snails require any special care? How many should I get for a 55 gallon tank?

Snails, can do the job but you can also go with tangs or angel fish which are algae grazers too. Also, check your phoshate & Nitrate levels since that can cause Brown Algae bloom.
