HAd my light on in the tank for too long at a time, now i have brown stuff, presumably algae, growing all over the aborigini hole stone ( very pale grey almost white and full of tiny chambersand holes ), the areas of plants in maximum exposure to the light and on the mangrove root too.

Switching the light off for 14 hours and on for 10.

Will this help curb its growth and will the shrimp, dwarf catfish and rasbora I will put in next week help to remove it?

All chemical levels good though hardness is at upper end levels.

Somebody help...

Hi, your issue sounds like diatoms. Diatom outbreaks are very common in new tanks and should go away on their own eventually. What kind of dwarf catfish do you have?

Hi Jobby, welcome to AA! SM is right on, sounds like diatoms to me. Very common in a newly setup tank. Most likely the problem will subside after the tank has been established for awhile.

I had a question about your plants, and your lighting... what kind of plants are they, and what kind of light is it? 10 hours isn't what I would call too long of a photoperiod, but if it is a newly established tank, I might recommend cutting back to even eight hours a day as you try to figure out what works best for your tank.

Thanks New Friends

At 17:30 GMT+1 I ll be round at a friends capturing the new residents from his tanks. Going to clean the algae of the Aboriginie Hole Stone and the Mangrove branch. Rearrange the plant life and get ready to rumble... :)

The plants i have are Lobelia Cadinalis, Spathiphyllum Quatro. The ones I bought anyway. Got a few other long leafed ones and some, Java Moss, I think it is. Growing new shoots fine. Hopefully the new creatures will do their thing on the algae. He s giving me either 15 or 50 Shrimp. Algae specialists included, so... fingers and fins and mandibles crossed.... . Bought and set up a timer for the light too. going for 9-10 hours photoperiod.

All advice is greatly appreciated. Will post photos later.

:)
