should the unit sit just above the water in the sump, so gravity pulls the the water out of filter, then down into sump water?

It should be sitting in the sump water some. There are hooks on the back for the unit to hang into the sump from. If a description of it doesn't help, I know I saw some reviews of this unit when it came out that showed how it was to be properly utilized.

I set it up so it's just above my sump water, when the chamber fills up it flows out to the sump water. I have tried both ways., and this way seems best for me..
