Well, I went ahead and did it... and it is a lot of light! I had two 25 watt of the old fashioned tube bulbs, and the new spirals are equal to 60 watts each. This might be a silly question, but can too much light stress out fish?

You've got a pair of 13W or 18W CFLs. That's definitely not enough to stress out the fish for long. They may hide for a little bit, but they'll adjust. A pair of 18W CFLs over a 29g is my dimmest tank My fish are fine and my plants grow well.

Thanks so much for the reply. It is just so much brighter than it used to be, I was just afraid the change would freak them out. But they seem to be doing okay!
