cichlids and plants

I keep hearing "oh, don't plant your cichlid tank because the're gonna beat it up" so I want to post here to say that is not a fact! My tank have been up foam year and plants are doing fine. Got the long leaf plants from Petco and maroon/green at my LFS.

Also, geekischic, maybe the reason that they aren't being destroyed is that you have such a large, rough, substrate. I believe the way cichlids go about destroying plants is digging them up, and your substrate may be preventing them from doing that. I will say to watch and see if your cichlids are trying to dig it up because if they are, with such a large, rough substrate it could cause damage to the cichlids' mouths.
