I read coconuts from the grocery store can be used to make cocohuts. But I am wondering about those cocohuts in the reptile section in Petsmart. The tag says 100% coconut, so are they safe in the aquarium?

Yes, the 100% coconut reptile huts are aquarium safe. I'd recommend rinsing them first to remove dust and loose fibers. I haven't used them personally in the aquarium, but they do sink, and apparently hold up as well as driftwood under water. You can also find them in the small animal section... I made a few of my own for my mouse colony.

I have had one in my tank for some time wtih no problems. At first they stand out too much for my persoal preference but soon get a growth of algae and darken up considerably. They end up blending in rather well in a planted tank after awhile. My bristlenose and straita botias like them a lot.
