I had never even heard of a stocking calculator until yesterday, but immediately people were talking about how useless they are. It seems the reason people say they're useless is because they generally use the 1" per gallon rule, which even I (a newbie) know is nonsense.
So, my question is: Can a stocking calculator actually work? If one was made in such a way that it didn't use the 1" per gallon rule, but instead used a lot of variables for all the different fish and animals you could put in a tank based on research done for each particular animal, would it be acceptable? What would you need to see in a stocking calculator to make it acceptable?
