CUC in sump?

I have a 55 gal tank with 20 gal sump. It's a 3 chamber sump with a skimmer, refugium for the center, and last stage for return pump. Is it ok to have hermit crabs, or will they eat up all the chaeto?

Nothing that eats algae goes in the sump.

So basically, the refugium is where I want the algae to grow?

Yes. The refugium is a place, free of predation, where algae and pods can grow.
