Drilling tanks for overflow and return

I have a kinda silly question maybe someone could input on it. Is it possable to drill a glass tank with the livestock still in it. I have a 75 gal with a hang on overflow and would like to change to a regular over flow. I didnt know if I could drain the tank half way and drill from the outside.

Its possible, but not the greatest idea. You have to have water running over the area where you're cutting or else it will overheat and crack the glass. Then you have to worry about stuff getting into the tank.

That said, I would say-no. You can't. You should really have a plumbers putty wall around the drill site that you keep full of water. You can't achieve this while the tank is right side up.
