How many apistogrammas would I be allowed in my planted 15 gallon tank (77 litres)..

Could I not perhaps have 3? 1 male and 2 female nothing else?

That could work, but the one female may get beat up if the others are spawning.

What else is in the tank? As a species only tank a trio of most would be fine. I'd agree with a pair and a few dithers as well. I'd stay away from the larger types and stick with panduro or cac regardless.

I agree that it should be fine, as long as you limit what else goes in the tank. Keep in mind that not all apistos are the same size/behavior, so choose wisely. HN1 gave some good smaller ones to look at.

Agreed, not all apisto species are harem breeders, in fact, most are pair breeders. Cacatuoides is the only harem breeder I really know of, most are gonna do better in pairs.
