The start up for sand can be. But with any substract you add. You always want to rinse it first before adding it, just do the same with sand. IMO i think sand is easier to clean.
 
But don't you have to replace the sand? It is pretty expensive
Also, I have goldfish pellets and Betta flakes, can I give those to my fish?
 
I have a 40 gal with sand for 4 months now and have not replaced any sand yet. Yes your fish with eat the food. If the fish dont, the shrimp will
 
You can get 50 lbs of play sand for $5 at home depot or lowes. Sooo much cheaper than gravel I wish I had known that when I started my tank

The kuhlis would work but the corys are iffy in polished gravel. Because there tends to be a lot of ditches inbetween the gravel pieces it's hard for them to get to the food, and they break their barbels.
