How much light does your tank get and for how long? Do you fertilize? Do you have any plants, and what kind? Do you dose CO2? Algae usually shows up because there are more nutrients in the water column than the plants can use, or too much light for the amount of nutrients so the plants can't grow fast enough.

I would suggest a light issue before a fert one. What kind ofblight do you have?

You can always start using excel. That'll nuke down your hair algae and make your plants happier.

I just say that because a lot of folks with plants don't want to cut light, so if they stop dosing ferts, they start getting algae. They go back to dosing ferts, or increase ferts, the algae goes away. :)
