Aquarium Advice Regular
Hi all!
I have a 55 gallon tank and am concerned with the temperature. I purchased a 300W Hydor heater. Right now I only have 4 neon tetras (10 have died - I believe - because of the heater) and 1 glo-fish. Earlier this week, we go to feed the fish and the tank is @ 85-F!! We turn the heater off, turn the lights off and start trying to oxygenate the tank by pouring tank water from about 1-2 feet above tank. The neons start dying. We wait for the temp to drop and turn on the heater to try to be around 78 but it drops to 75. We turn it up and it goes up to 85 again! Now it's at 76 and the heater is set to 79. I'm trying to figure out if the heater is broken. We see the light turning on and off BUT after changing the temp on the knob...it takes a while before anything happens. I keep reading that you should check it in a couple of hours so I'm expecting a change and nothing happens. How long should it take for the temp to change after moving the temp knob? Do I need to invest in a power head to move the water around??
Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
