heater question

I noticed a lot of tanks have the heater across the back horizontal at the top of the tank. Is this purely aesthetics or is there a reason to do it this way?
I have mine at the bottom, hidden.

It's more about preference,however you should have it placed in an area with flow for better distribution..

Yes, people tend to do that just to make the tank look better overall. I usually like to put it near the intake/output of the filter.
