ok how old the tank is doesnt really matter..it matters how long the tank has been up and running and if the filter has established beneficial bacterial.
you said you cleaned the filter and gravel etc.. how did you clean the filter? did you use tap water? bleach? If you used tap water you possibly killed off the good bacteria in the filter.
best bet is to do a water change ASAP, and then get a liquid test kit tomorrow. I would bet money it is the water conditions that are causing your problems. The tank is not cycled causing high ammonia and nitrite levels.
