Hard to say with 100% certianty but it looks like a sponge , any way to get a better pic ?

Not really but I am going to stick with sponge ... Is it hard , soft , does it retract into anything if touched ??
If it is a sponge it is safe and will harm nothing it will grow inresponse to the ammount of food it has available to it .... They just filter the water
