Our betta JT has a bump/growth on his dorsal fin (see photo). The bump has developed a layer of grunge over it. The bump has been there for a couple months. At first it didn't seem to be bothering him, but it started to get bigger and grow some fuzz/mold so we used Jungle Fungus Clear. He has had fin rot issues off and on for about a year despite water parameters checking out when tested with a liquid test kit. We tried treating the fin rot with with BettaFix recently. It seems like the fin rot has stopped, or at least slowed.
JT is acting a bit lethargic. He is still eating and swimming around, but is sitting on the bottom of the tank more than usual and has some loss of color. We started another dose of Fungus Clear this morning. Any ideas about the bump and possible treatment suggestions would be welcome.
More details below.
1~What type of fish is afflicted? In addition, please describe what is wrong with the fish to the best of your ability (i.e. cotton like growth, bloated, etc.).
See above.
2~What are your tank parameters (ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, temp, pH)? Please give exact values.
Ammonia 0 ppm
Nitrites 0 ppm
Nitrates 5.0 ppm
Temp 78 deg F
pH 7.0
3~ How large is the tank? How long has the tank been set up?
5 gallon tank. He has been in this tank for at least 6 months. It was cycled before he was put in.
4~What type of filtration are you using? Please give the name and number (i.e. Fluval 304) and amount of gph if known.
We’re using a sponge filter.
5~How many fish are in the tank? What kinds of fish are they and what are their current sizes?
He is in the tank by himself.
6~When is the last time you did a water change and vacuum the gravel? How often do you do this? How much water do you remove at a time?
We’ve been doing water changes/vacuuming gravel once every 5-7 days recently to try to keep the water quality high. We usually would do about a 20-25% change but with the Fungus Clear treatments we’ve done ~70% change.
7~How long have you had the fish? If the fish is new, how did you acclimate it/them?
He’s about two years old.
8~Have you added anything new to the tank--decor, new dechlorinator, new substrate, etc.?
For the last two months we’ve been transitioning from our (high PH) tap water to bottled spring water.
9~What kind of food have you been feeding your fish, have you changed their diet recently?
NorthFin Cichlid Formula (couldn’t find Betta Bits, but this is extremely similar based on manufacturer info). We soak the pellets for 5-10 min before feeding. He’s been eating this for 6-8 months.
