First off hi. I was able to get a used 55 gal tank from my sister.
but is was very badly neglected for several years. the salt comes off but I am left with faint lines where the water was evaporated. I hope some one can tell me how to get rid of them. Thanks in advance.

Try vinegar, it is the safest option. If you use any other cleaners, make sure you rinse thouroughly, even small traces can kill a whole tank.

Start with a razor blade (as long as you have glass and not acrylic). Use that to scrape off what you can. Then vinegar or lemon juice. Rinse it thoroughly!

Use chemicals as last resort and wash even more thoroughly.

If the lines are indeed a result of evaporation the vinegar will do the trick. Use full strignth with a soft cloth and some elbow greese and it should come out fairly well.
