How long to seed new media?

I've recently bought a new Fluval Edge (46 litre) and am keen to get it up and going.

Rather than transferring some old media, I decided to seed it by placing the new bio media into the rear sump of my established tank (Aquanano 40) and on top of the existing bio rings.

How long would it take for the new media to establish a colony of beneficial bacteria?

I´d give it a couple of weeks. It´s always a good idea to put some filter media from your established tank in your new filter too.
