What I have heard is that you have to maintain circulation and then it can be left indefinitely. I have never left mine for more than 3 or 4 days and that is with a powerhead in it.

Well if you have a lid and circulation you can leave it forever. You need a lid though evaluate if you don't have one the water will evaporate and the salinity will rise.
