I would say 1 or 2x a week which ever makes you feel satisfied. but you don't need to waste money on test kits.

But in my 10 gallon, even with a similar routine, I test weekly, I noticed also that small tanks can go wrong faster than the big one...

Sorry in still new. I just got the fx5 so should I be cleaning it and rinsing sponges in tank water at every water change?

Convict2161 said:Well thanks for all the responses!! I think I'll tone down the testing if my OCD let's me!
I've gotten out of bed at night and said to my wife, I should probably go test the water. She's like you just did this morning. And I'm like yeah but ya never know.

That's a lot of time spent testing and money spent on the testing kits. When I found out about large, weekly water changes, I stopped testing any of my tanks.
My testing kit is likely expired by now and I wouldn't remember how to use it anyway.
Just an "old school" water changing fanatic!

I'll test daily for a while after making changes such as adding new fish or if I ever need to change filter media, etc. If I see a fish acting weird I'll test then of course but other than that a couple of times a week is how often I usually test. I might test PH a bit more just because my water is soft and want to make sure there aren't any swings even though I do two weekly pwc and have crushed coral in the filter to keep things stable. I think you can relax a bit and enjoy the tank.
