Against advice to start with a larger tank, I started a 29-gallon nano reef tank about ten years ago. Despite a lot of research & effort, I became known in my house as clownfish and coral serial killer. I dismantled it when we moved.

I don't wish to inflict that on more innocent creatures, so I have this question:
In general terms, would I have to become less of an alchemist to successfully maintain a freshwater tank?

Freshwater tanks are less work to keep. 29 gallons is a good size to give you a variety of fish to choose from.

Absolutely, I have a mixed reef and 3 freshwater aquariums and fw is easier.

Just replace half the water every 2 weeks using a dechlorinator (API prime) and a hose that attaches to your sink and you are good to go. No rodi water to worry about. No special lighting. No evaporation / ato / top off issues.

If your tank doesn't have a glass lid or hood I would add one.
