Hello everyone,

I was wondering if anyone knows if this is a Jack Dempsey. I have him/her in a 75 gallon with a couple of blood parrots and they all get along great. I have had this fish for close to a year now and has only grown about two inches. If it is a Dempsey, is it a male or female? I have been feeding him/her blood worms and cichlid pellets. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

That's a jack for sure. They grow extremely slow but that's unusual. They normally grow about 1 inch every two months up to about 5-6 inches. At least all of the ones I have had do.

Ok well that's good. Do you have any idea what the sex of it might be or if I should try a new food?

What type of cichlid pellets? And I have no idea if its male or female not to great at sexing fish.

I'm no good at gender either, but JD's can get a little bit bigger then 6". Had mine for 2 years and a few months now and he's coming close to 9".

Yah the females tend to max out at 6 inches. Males about 8-10 I meant by they get up to 5-6 inches in the first year usually. What I said sounded like that was their max size my bad.

Hard to tell sex by your pics. Blue beard and little blue on the body is female. now blue on the jaw and lots of blue spangles on the upper part of the body then male.

No worries, that's what I read it as but all good :)

Your seems to look a little bit like a female. From the pics it looks like there is no blue or hardly any at all on the body.

You say female but describing male traits. males have no beards opposite of humans :) no positive way of telling from those pics.

Well I was confused lol sorry I flipped those I thought they had more blue on face. I thought makes were blue everywhere.

All have blue spangles on fins and tails and most have spangle on lower part of the body. Females have the blue beards and no or very little blue spangles on the top of their body. Males have no or very little blue on the gill cover and lower jaw but will have more blue spangles on the body especially the upper half.

The best way to tell aside from venting is the beard because some will luck out and get a female that also has the blue on the body.
